Evolving from the punk era, New Wave, New Romantic and Gothic styles were to have a strong influence on fashion from the late 70s until the early to mid 80s. Distinct from punk and pub rock culture which was still very much in evidence, emergent bands such as Adam and the Ants, Boy George's Culture Club, Duran Duran and Blondie were very much in the ascendant, and fashionsitas responded enthusiastically as Madonna single handedly sparked an underwear as outwerwear revolution! Think lots of eyeliner, spiked hair and statement clothing, from bondage-related wear right through to the romantic ruffles and pirate looks created by Vivienne Westwood (with lots of creative and colourful combinations in between!)
